Therapy for Men in NYC

Men are told from a young age to suppress their emotions. I hope this sort of rhetoric is fading away, but I still hear it far too often.

First and foremost, if you’re struggling with emotional or behavioral concerns, or worried about problems at work or in your personal life, there is no shame in seeking support from someone who understands the skills and strategies you need to make life a little easier to navigate.

On this page, you can learn more about therapy services for men with me, Dr. Daniel Clark, at Park West Psychology.

Who Should Consider Therapy?

Sometimes men I’ve talked to waited a long time to schedule therapy sessions. They didn’t think they needed it. They thought therapy was just for people who couldn’t manage their own lives. They believe therapy was just for people who have been through extreme traumas or are in immediate crisis. While therapy is definitely a resource in these situations, that’s not the only time therapy can be beneficial.

As a man, let me say this – we could all probably use some therapy. We’re fed a ton of problematic narratives about masculinity, relationships, and emotions throughout our lives, and it can be extremely beneficial to really dig into these accepted norms of thinking, feeling, and acting and how destructive they can be.

Benefits of Therapy for Men

In addition to generally offering skills and strategies to improve daily life, men may consider scheduling therapy sessions in a range of situations, including:

  • Working through changes or transitions in life.

  • Improving parenting skills and learning to be the father your children need.

  • Developing lasting personal, professional, or romantic relationships.

  • Learning new and better communication strategies.

  • Managing disordered or overwhelming emotions, like anger, anxiety, and depression.

  • Coping with stress in healthier ways.

  • Achieving your career and professional goals.

  • Supporting recovery from substance use disorders.

Will Therapy Help?

The most honest answer I can give to this question is this – therapy will help if you want it to. I’m committed to helping men really understand how to develop healthy ways of coping with life’s challenges, difficult emotions, and complicated relationships. That involves discussing your emotions, thoughts, and experiences with me, but therapy will also provide real skills and strategies you can use to make life a little easier.
